the Graduate

The 'Grad', as it is affectionately known, is a 12' sailing dinghy designed for two people. Originally designed and built by Wyche & Coppock this attractive dinghy has seen a number of updates to the hull and sail plan over the years. These improvements have resulted in a boat which is a joy to sail holding its own against much younger designs. The beauty of Grad is its light weight and straight forward controls giving easy handling both on and off the water. Internal layouts can be varied within the limits of the measurement rules allowing a truly bespoke boat to suit all, making it an ideal boat for families as well as the keen racer.

The Graduate Dinghy Association (GDA) is responsible for supporting Graduate owners by building a community in which sailors can share their experiences as well as providing technical advice. The GDA organises a 3-day National Championship at a variety of mostly inland venues plus Southern and Northern championships. Fleet racing takes place at Chipstead Sailing Club in Kent and participation in handicap racing is encouraged, whether that is club racing or as part of larger open meetings such as the Sailjuice Series.

Some members are keen cruisers, with recent explorations of the Isle of Wight, the Norfolk Broads, and Lake Windermere.

We here at Butler Boats have been appointed by the Graduate Dinghy Association to build a new Grad internal design to compliment the highly successful hull design used on all the recent FRP boats. With the help of the GDA we are building our Composite Grad featuring a fibreglass hull with timber superstructure and decks to our own specification. We are immensely happy with the outcome which has produced an extremely pretty boat, much admired when on display on the GDA stand at the RYA Water sports and Dinghy Show (see image left).
